As mystifying as diet is, I’ve learned to simplify and really reduce the amount of attention I give what I consume. While I follow the raw vegan lifestyle for a number of reasons (mainly because I feel amazing, have great energy, think clearly), I also feel the best about living in a way that doesn’t harm others, nourishes my soul and body, and promotes a healthier planet.
That said, I get asked often “What do you eat??”. I make delicious, gourmet raw food for others, but the truth is, I feel my lightest, cleanest, and happiest when I eat mainly fruits, vegetables, and greens. It’s rare, honestly that I eat overt fats and nuts/seeds (kind of similar to the 80/10/10 diet by Doug Graham) and only what I need.
I’ve come a long way battling eating disorder issues (on both sides of the spectrum), learning to respect my body enough to eat what I desire, yet also respecting myself enough to say “It’s okay, I’m actually not hungry, I won’t overeat”. Now, I feel I’ve gained a good balance for me, but I want to caution that our bodies are constantly in a state of fluctuation.
While I believe everyone can thrive on a predominantly plant-based diet with a lot of raw foods, I know it’s not for everyone. Personalities, dislikes, interests, biochemical change, genetic predisposition, energy, life paths, Ayurvedic dosha, and more all play a part to an extent; yet, for me, this is what I love and feel best consuming.
**I also engage in movement exercise, drink plenty of pure water, sun gaze, walk barefoot, breath pure water, spend time in meditation and contemplation, live with pure intent, and try to eat as organic as possible**
Typical Dietary Regime:
Morning/Breakfast:
16 oz. pure water or 8 oz. fresh coconut water and 8 oz. water
later…
1/2 medium-sized watermelon
1-2 Mangoes or 2 Cups Rambutans (red, hairy ball fruit)
Snacks:
3-4 Bananas or
2 Cups Raw Heart of Palm (I LOVE HoP!) 🙂 or
Banana/Celery/Kale Smoothie
Raw Pasta with a low-fat dressing
1 head of romaine from the Garden (or more greens if I want)
1 medium-large Zucchini, spiralized
1/2 Tomato, 1 Red Bell pepper, 1 Mango, fresh Dill, lemon juice…blended for a dressing
1/2 Cucumber, chopped
Snacks:
1/2 Pineapple or
previous snack suggestion
Dinner:
Vita-Mix Blender full of GREEN SOUP!
1/2 Cucumber
1 Cup Celery
1/2 Lime
1/2 Red Bell Pepper and/or 1/2 Tomato
3/4 Cup Fresh Herbs (Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Dill… from the garden!)
1 head of Greens (romaine, chard, bok choy, etc…)
1/2 Cup Water
1 tbsp Dulse
1/4 – 1/2 Avocado
Blended!
Usually that is plenty of food for me. I might snack on a little bit more fruit an hour or two after a large salad or a green soup, but the nutrition I’m obtaining is abundant and you’ll find the longer you stick to a raw vegan lifestyle, the less you really need to eat. However, I <3 food and I’m quite comfortable with that!
Also, keep in mind this food is mainly water, fiber, and nutrition. It may seem like a lot (and it is, in volume), but caloric wise it’s still less than what most people consume just from 1-2 meals on a Standard American Diet. (Perhaps that’s another reason I like eating fruits and vegetables!)
This post was meant to help clarify any questions regarding how I eat. I believe it is optimal to eat simply, but also follow your own preference and guidance. If this helped you, I’m super glad! Thanks for reading…!
